The grading criteria for the orchestra program is structured so that all students, regardless of innate talent, ability, or skill level, can achieve a high grade. It places emphasis on, and rewards a student for regular attendance, preparedness, effort, progress, and a commitment to attend concerts and dress rehearsals. The individual effort, or lack thereof, of even one student, will impact the entire ensemble. Students are held accountable for the success of the orchestra.
The intent of the grading system is to foster an attitude of constant and continual improvement towards achieving one’s personal best, and to foster loyalty and commitment to the orchestra as a whole.
Criteria:
Attendance at all classes – 10%
Come prepared with your instrument, music, and a pencil – 10%
100% participation, effort, and focus while in class – 10%
Make progress – 35%
Attend all dress rehearsals and concerts - 35%
Progress will me measured against a 4 point system. Students will be assessed periodically as needed using performance tests during class time.
Point System:
Level 4 – Mastery – Student exceeds expectations. Requires no support.
Level 3 – Proficient – Student meets expectations. Requires minimal, if any, support.
Level 2 – Basic – Student performs below expectations. Requires some support.
Level 1 – Novice – Student performs well below expectations. Requires ongoing support.
Unscoreable – Student is unable to perform and does not demonstrate understanding. A parent conference may be requested.
